Sailfish: Another alernative

Bored from android? Here is coming alternative for you. Finnish company Jolla, established by Ex-nokia employees developed a new OS called sailfish. Sailfish owns a fresh, different UI and many new features. The best thing is that it can run android applications along with its own apps. Jolla announced its 1st smartphone on 20th May, 2013.

Sailfish Overview:
·        Linux-based, open source
·        Mer software distributor
·        Wayland display server protocol
·        Qt framework for application development and GUI
·        QML design language
·        Custom built UI
·        Support for android apps as third party solution
Sailfish Homescreen
Mer is the inherited from the well-known  MeeGoTM, used in Nokia N800 and N810. Mer is the part of operating system below GUI and above kernel, made for graphics, software management, multimedia, communications and Personal Information Management.
QML (Qt Meta Language) is the Javascript based language for designing UI applications. QML is a part of Qt. Sailfish SDK can run on MAC, Linux or Windows. Developed apps are to be submitted on Jolla Harbour
(Jolla Store).

Jolla Ltd. Introduced Sailfish smartphone having pretty Finnish design and usual specifications. The innovative about this device is its cover, the “Other half”. Its replacable back cover can contain built-in software or/and hardware which would change UI if you change it.The image below is the proposed design.

Proximity Detector

Based on a simple basic idea, this infrared proximity detector is easy to build, easy to calibrate and still, it provides a detection range of about 10 cm. This range can change depending on the ambient light intensity. Thus, the circuit is extremely easy and can be used for most indoor applications.

A Proximity Detector is a sensor able to detect the presence of nearby objects without any physical contact. A proximity detector often emits a beam of infrared, and looks for changes in the field or return signal. The object being sensed is often referred to as the proximity sensor’s target. The maximum distance that this sensor can detect is defined as “nominal range”.

Proximity sensor has a high reliability and long functional life because of the absence of mechanical parts and lack of physical contact between the sensor and the sensed object. Proximity sensors are also used in machine vibration monitoring to measure the variation in distance between a shaft and its support bearing.
